Scientists have made a recent discovery that will give the even the most famous gems in the world some serious competition. Twinkling in the sky some 50 light years away from Earth, they’ve discovered an alien planet composed largely of diamond. This huge cosmic diamond, known technically as BPM 37093 is actually a crystallized white dwarf- the hot core of a star that is left over after it has died out. The center of this star-planet is made up mostly of highly compressed carbon- in the form of a 10 billion trillion trillion carat diamond. You would need a jeweler’s loupe the size of the Sun to grade it! The diamond star completely outclasses even the largest diamonds on Earth, including the 546-carat Golden Jubilee which was cut from a stone mined in South Africa. Astronomers have affectionately named the celestial diamond “Lucy” after the Beatles song, “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” Now that’s a diamond that really lasts forever!
